The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, on Tuesday to be sold to consumers in the United States, a step taken by the drugmaker.
Pfizer, the world's largest drugmaker, said it has received approval from the FDA for its drug, which treats erectile dysfunction.
The drug treats men with impotence by increasing blood flow to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection.
In a letter sent to the agency on Tuesday, Pfizer said it has received three FDA-approved drug formulations for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, including Pfizer's product, Vfolliclo, and its generic version, Viagra. The drug is sold in three strengths: 50 milligrams, 100 milligrams and 150 milligrams.
Pfizer is not disclosing the product it acquired from the German drugmaker to American drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co.
Lilly's Vfolliclo and the generic product, Viagra, are FDA-approved drugs, and Vfolliclo is the generic for Pfizer's brand-name drug, sildenafil citrate, which is the same drug that was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in June. Sales of sildenafil citrate to consumers have been on the rise in recent years, as Viagra and its generic counterpart, Cialis, are gaining traction.
On Monday, the drugmaker agreed to pay $2.9 billion to resolve a patent dispute that has already resulted in the generic version of the drug, which is expected to cost more than $2 billion this year.
Lilly, the world's second-largest drugmaker, has already received U. approval to sell its erectile dysfunction drug, Vfolliclo, in the United States.
Pfizer said U. FDA approval will enable the drugmaker to begin selling Vfolliclo in the United States on Nov. 27, and it is expected to begin selling the generic product in Canada on the same day. Vfolliclo will also begin selling the drug in the United States on Nov. 10.
Lilly will continue to manufacture and sell the drug in the United States, and Pfizer will make and distribute Vfolliclo in three markets: Canada, the United States and Europe. Vfolliclo is expected to begin selling in the United States in the spring of 2018.
